A good VO2 max depends almost entirely on age and sex, so a single number means nothing on its own. For men aged 20 to 29, roughly 42 to 45 ml/kg/min is above average and above 59 is superior. For women in the same bracket those thresholds are roughly 36 to 39 and above 51. Both fall by about 10 percent per decade after 30.

Reading the chart: find your age row, then your sex table, and locate your number. The decline with age is normal physiology, not a training failure. A 55 year old in the Good band is fitter relative to their peers than a 25 year old in the Average band, which is the whole reason the calculator reports a fitness age alongside the raw figure.

VO2 Max: Common Questions

VO2 max is the single best lab predictor of endurance performance, and field tests like the ones above estimate it within roughly 5 to 15% of a treadmill gas-exchange test, depending on the method.

How do I calculate my VO2 max?

The most accurate at-home method is a 12-minute all-out run (the Cooper test): VO2 max equals (distance in meters minus 504.9) divided by 44.73. A 1.5-mile time trial and the Rockport 1-mile walk test use their own formulas and are also field-validated. All three require an all-out effort, so warm up first and pace yourself so the last minute is your hardest, not your first.

What is a good VO2 max for my age?

A "good" VO2 max depends heavily on age and sex, which is why this calculator classifies your result against an age-bracketed, sex-split reference table rather than one universal number. A 25-year-old man in the Average tier and a 55-year-old woman in the Average tier have different raw VO2 max scores despite matching population percentiles. Can I estimate VO2 max without running or exercising at all?

Yes: the resting heart rate ratio method needs only your age and your resting heart rate, taken lying down first thing in the morning. It uses VO2 max = 15.3 times (estimated max heart rate divided by resting heart rate). It is the least precise of the four methods here, roughly plus or minus 15% versus a lab test, against roughly 5 to 10% for the three field tests that require an effort.

How can I increase my VO2 max without running?

High-intensity interval training on a bike, rower, or elliptical raises VO2 max as effectively as running intervals do, since the adaptation is cardiovascular and muscular oxygen extraction, not sport-specific. Swimming and cross-country skiing intervals work the same way. What matters is repeated efforts at or near your current threshold, not the mode of exercise; running is simply the most common way people access that intensity.

Does a supplement actually raise VO2 max?

Not on its own, and not quickly. Interval training produces the largest average VO2 max gains of any single intervention in controlled studies; a supplement is, at best, a small addition on top of a training block already in progress. How does VO2 max change with age?

VO2 max declines roughly 10 percent per decade after about age 30 in untrained adults, and closer to 5 percent per decade in people who keep training consistently. The decline is normal physiology rather than a training failure, which is why the chart above is bracketed by age and why the calculator reports a fitness age: staying in the same category as you get older already means you are outperforming the trend.

Why do the four test methods give different results?

Each method estimates VO2 max from a different proxy: race-pace effort (Cooper, 1.5-mile), submaximal walking heart rate (Rockport), or resting heart rate alone. Submaximal and non-exercise methods trade precision for convenience, and a small error in your walking heart rate or resting heart rate reading shifts the estimate more than a pacing error does in an all-out test.
