Honolulu Marathon
A December marathon that starts at 5 AM in the dark and finishes in tropical sun. Downtown, Waikiki, Diamond Head twice and an out-and-back to Hawaii Kai, in heat and humidity most of the field has not trained in.
At the Honolulu Marathon, plan 500 to 900 mg sodium per hour, and 900 to 1200 mg for salty sweaters or runners arriving unacclimated from a cold winter. The 5 AM start feels cool, but tropical humidity and late-morning heat build through the Hawaii Kai out-and-back and the final climb around Diamond Head.
Honolulu Fueling Plan
For a 165 lb athlete finishing Honolulu in about 5 hr, plan roughly 70 g of carbs, 650 mg of sodium (900 mg for a salty sweater) and 700 ml of fluid per hour. That is about 350 g of carbs and 3,300 mg of sodium across the race.

What's On Course
The organizer lists 16 aid stations with water, sports drink and medical help, the first at about mile 2.5 and then every 2 to 3 miles. Gels are at four of them, at miles 9, 12, 15 and 20 (each can move by up to half a mile). Precision Fuel & Hydration is the official nutrition partner from 2026, with PF 30 gels and chews on course and PH 1000 electrolyte drink at selected stations. There is no cut-off time: the finish stays open until the last person crosses, though everyone must keep moving.

The Cumulative Deficit Window
Honolulu is a winter race for most of its field and a summer race for its weather. Thousands of runners arrive from cold climates in December without heat acclimation, then race from about 70F at the 5 AM start toward 80F by late morning, with tropical humidity throughout. Unacclimated athletes sweat saltier than acclimated ones, so the visitors most likely to under-plan sodium are the ones losing the most. The long out-and-back on Kalanianaole Highway to Hawaii Kai is exposed, and the second pass around Diamond Head comes in the final miles, when the sun is up and the deficit has built. Many runners are on course for five hours or more, which turns a marathon into a long heat exposure.
Key Considerations
- If you are coming from a northern winter, you are not heat acclimated. Plan sodium as for a hot race: 500 to 900 mg per hour, more for salty sweaters.
- The 5 AM start feels cool and dark. Start sodium and fluid early anyway, because the heat arrives on the Hawaii Kai out-and-back when you are already halfway through.
- Use the aid stations for cooling as well as drinking. Sponges and water over the head lower thermal strain on the exposed highway miles.
- Arrive a few days early if you can. Even a few days in Hawaii heat starts the acclimation that lowers how much sodium you lose in sweat.

About Honolulu
How much sodium should I take per hour at the Honolulu Marathon?
Most runners need 500 to 900 mg per hour, and salty sweaters or unacclimated visitors from cold climates often 900 to 1200 mg as the morning heats up. Use the calculator, and choose the hot and humid setting if race week forecasts highs above about 80F.
How hot is the Honolulu Marathon?
The 5 AM start is usually around 70F with high humidity, and temperatures climb toward 80F by late morning. The heat builds just as most of the field reaches the exposed miles to Hawaii Kai and back.
Where are the hills on the Honolulu Marathon course?
The course is mostly flat. The climbs come around Diamond Head, once early in the race and again on the ocean side near the finish in Kapiolani Park, with gentle rolling sections on Kalanianaole Highway out to Hawaii Kai.
How fast do runners finish the Honolulu Marathon?
In 2025 Tsegay Weldlibanos won in 2:13:41 and Calli Hauger-Thackery in 2:30:44, both first-time champions, in rainy and humid conditions. Most participants take four to seven hours, and many walk part of the course.
