Does Beetroot Lower Cholesterol? What Trials Show: The Short Answer
Beetroot does not lower cholesterol. A 2022 meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials (Amirpoor et al., Current Problems in Cardiology) found no significant effect on total cholesterol, LDL, HDL or triglycerides, and no difference by health status or by the form of beetroot used, juice or powder. A 12-week trial in adults with type 2 diabetes found the same. What beetroot does have evidence for is blood pressure and blood vessel function.
Beetroot has real evidence behind it for blood pressure. For cholesterol, the randomized trials found nothing: no change in LDL, HDL, total cholesterol or triglycerides, in juice, powder or any other form. That is worth knowing, because "does beetroot lower cholesterol" is one of the fastest-growing beetroot questions on Google, up about 170% over the twelve months to September 2026, and most product pages leave the impression it does.

Does Beetroot Lower Cholesterol?
No. When researchers pooled the randomized controlled trials of beetroot and blood lipids, beetroot had no significant effect on total cholesterol, LDL, HDL or triglycerides. The result held whether participants were healthy or had a medical condition, and whether they took beetroot as juice, powder or another form.
That pooled analysis is Amirpoor et al., published in Current Problems in Cardiology in 2022, covering human randomized trials published through December 2020 (PubMed 34154819). Its authors concluded that beetroot "cannot be categorized as an effective supplementation for adjustment of lipid profile."
The confidence intervals for every lipid measure crossed zero:
| Lipid measure | Mean difference vs control (95% CI) | Significant? |
|---|---|---|
| Total cholesterol | +1.25 (-0.03 to 2.53) | No |
| LDL cholesterol | -0.48 (-1.04 to 0.09) | No |
| HDL cholesterol | +0.54 (-0.13 to 1.21) | No |
| Triglycerides | -0.47 (-1.16 to 0.21) | No |
A non-significant result is not the same as proof of zero effect, but four null results across every lipid measure, with no subgroup standing out, is about as clear a "no" as nutrition research gives.
What Did the Individual Trials Find?
The trials behind that pooled result point the same way. A 12-week trial of daily concentrated beetroot juice in adults with type 2 diabetes found no effect on cholesterol, LDL, HDL or triglycerides. The only positive lipid finding we could locate came from beet leaves and stalks, not the root, and lasted one meal.
| Study | Who and what | Lipid result |
|---|---|---|
| Karimzadeh et al., 2023 (Irish Journal of Medical Science), PubMed 35869311 | 46 adults with type 2 diabetes; 24 ml concentrated beetroot juice daily for 12 weeks, against no intervention | No significant effect on total cholesterol, LDL, HDL or triglycerides after adjusting for baseline |
| Gomes et al., 2019 (Nutrition), PubMed 31029925 | 13 adults with dyslipidemia per group; one high-fat meal with beet LEAF and stalk juice, crossover | Blunted the drop in HDL that followed the meal; no other lipid differences |
| Mansouri-Baseri et al., 2025 (BioMed Research International), PubMed 41473738 | 90 adults with coronary artery disease; beetroot capsules for 4 weeks | Shifts in fatty acid ratios and oxidative stress markers; cholesterol was not the measured outcome |
Two details matter when a product page cites any of these. The Gomes result used the green tops of the plant, which are a different food from the root that every beetroot powder and capsule is made of. And the coronary artery disease trial measured fatty acid ratios, not LDL or total cholesterol, so it cannot be read as a cholesterol result.
The diabetes trial is also worth knowing for a second reason: the same 12 weeks of beetroot juice had no effect on fasting glucose, insulin or HbA1c either.
Do Rosabella Beetroot Capsules or Other Brands Lower Cholesterol?
No brand-specific evidence changes the answer. We found no published trial of any branded beetroot capsule or powder on cholesterol, and the meta-analysis found no difference by the form of beetroot used. A capsule of beetroot powder is beetroot, so the null lipid result applies to it the same way it applies to juice.
This question comes up most for Rosabella beetroot capsules, the most searched beetroot brand in the US, where "is Rosabella beetroot good for cholesterol" and "Rosabella beetroot for cholesterol" are common searches. The answer is the same for Rosabella, for Beetroot Pro and for any other beetroot product: none of them has trial evidence for lowering cholesterol, and the category-wide trials found no effect.
If a label or ad implies otherwise, ask which trial it is relying on. It is usually one of the three above, which between them measured beet greens, a single meal, or fatty acid ratios rather than cholesterol.
Beetroot Pro delivers standardized dietary nitrate to lower the oxygen cost of every effort.
What Does Beetroot Actually Do for Your Heart?
Beetroot's real cardiovascular evidence is for blood pressure and blood vessel function, not cholesterol. A 2021 meta-analysis of 27 randomized trials found beetroot nitrate modestly improved how well arteries dilate and slightly reduced arterial stiffness, and separate meta-analyses report average systolic blood pressure reductions of about 3 to 5 mmHg.
| Measure | Pooled result | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Flow-mediated dilation (how well arteries widen) | +0.62 percentage points | Bahrami et al., 2021 (Nitric Oxide), 27 RCTs, PubMed 34119659 |
| Pulse wave velocity (arterial stiffness, lower is better) | -0.27 m/s | Same meta-analysis |
| Systolic blood pressure | About -3 to -5 mmHg on average | See beetroot powder for blood pressure |
The clearest single illustration comes from people who actually have high cholesterol. In a randomized, double-blind trial of 67 adults with untreated high cholesterol (Velmurugan et al., 2016, American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, PubMed 26607938), six weeks of daily nitrate-rich beetroot juice improved flow-mediated dilation by 1.1 percentage points, about 24% above baseline, while the placebo group's worsened by 0.3. The trial was designed to measure artery function, and that is where the effect showed up.
These are vascular effects, driven by the conversion of beetroot's dietary nitrate to nitric oxide, which relaxes blood vessel walls. Blood cholesterol is regulated by a different system, largely in the liver, which fits with beetroot moving one set of numbers and not the other.
The blood pressure effect is also larger in older adults: a 2025 University of Exeter trial found about a 4 mmHg drop in mean arterial pressure in adults aged 67 to 79 after two weeks of beetroot juice, and no such drop in adults aged 18 to 30. For the full evidence and the dose it takes, see how long beetroot powder takes to lower blood pressure.
What Does Lower Cholesterol?
Soluble fiber has the strongest supplement-level evidence. A 2023 meta-analysis of 181 randomized trials found soluble fiber lowered LDL by about 8 mg/dL and total cholesterol by about 11 mg/dL, with each extra 5 g a day adding roughly another 5 to 6 mg/dL. Oats, barley, beans and psyllium are the usual sources.
| Change per extra 5 g/day of soluble fiber | Pooled result |
|---|---|
| LDL cholesterol | About -5.6 mg/dL |
| Total cholesterol | About -6.1 mg/dL |
Source: Ghavami et al., 2023 (Advances in Nutrition), 181 randomized trials and 14,505 participants, PubMed 36796439.
A serving of beetroot powder or a couple of capsules supplies far less soluble fiber than the 5 g a day steps in these trials, and standardized beet extracts have most of the fiber removed. So if cholesterol is the goal, beetroot is the wrong tool whatever its form. Diet, activity, and where a doctor recommends it, medication, are the levers with evidence behind them. For a wider view of what beetroot is and is not good for, see beetroot powder's health benefits and beetroot side effects.
The Bottom Line
Beetroot does not lower cholesterol. The pooled randomized evidence found no effect on LDL, HDL, total cholesterol or triglycerides, in any form, for healthy people or those with a condition. Its genuine cardiovascular evidence is for blood pressure and arterial function, so choose it for those reasons, and use soluble fiber and medical advice for cholesterol.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does beetroot lower LDL cholesterol? No. The 2022 meta-analysis of randomized trials found a mean LDL difference of -0.48 with a confidence interval crossing zero, which is not a significant effect.
Is Rosabella beetroot good for cholesterol? There is no published trial of Rosabella on cholesterol, and the category-wide trials found beetroot in any form had no significant effect on cholesterol. Rosabella is beetroot powder in a capsule, so the same null result applies.
Does beetroot juice lower cholesterol? No. Juice was among the forms the meta-analysis covered, and a 12-week trial of daily concentrated beetroot juice in adults with type 2 diabetes found no effect on any lipid measure.
